Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY: LC 33 6365 "Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act" would serve to inform students participating in athletic activities about the warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • the Department of Education shall develop and post on its website guidelines and materials about the nature and warning signs of cardiac arrest, including the risks of participating in play or practice after experiencing certain symptoms and warning signs
  • prior to participation in an athletic activity, the student and parent shall each school year sign and return to the school an acknowledgment of receipt and review of the sudden cardiac arrest symptoms and warning signs
  • a student who passes out during or following an activity shall be removed from participation and shall not be permitted to return to participation until cleared to return in writing by an appropriate health care provider
  • each school year, each coach shall review the guidelines and relevant materials approved by the Department of Education 

EFFECTIVE DATE:  Upon approval by the General Assembly and Governor.
